Methodology

State income tax is computed for a single filer with the federal standard deduction and no pre-tax deductions, using each jurisdiction's 2025 income-tax schedule (graduated brackets or flat rate). The nine no-income-tax states return $0 in state tax by definition.

The nine states with no tax on wage income are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. New Hampshire joined the group on Jan 1, 2025 when its Interest & Dividends tax was repealed; Washington still taxes high earners' long-term capital gains (7%, plus 2.9% over $1M).

Take-home reflects gross minus federal income tax (2026 IRS brackets), FICA (Social Security 6.2% + Medicare 1.45%), and state income tax. Local/city income taxes and tax credits are excluded.

“Taxes instead” figures describe each no-tax state's primary revenue sources (property, sales, severance or gaming taxes) — the reason no state is truly tax-free. For a personalised figure, use the state calculator linked in each row.

Frequently asked questions

Which states have no income tax in 2026?

Nine states levy no tax on wage income: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. New Hampshire became fully income-tax-free on Jan 1, 2025 when it repealed its 3% Interest & Dividends tax. Washington has no wage tax but does tax high earners' long-term capital gains.

Are no-income-tax states actually cheaper to live in?

Not necessarily. Every no-tax state makes up the revenue elsewhere: Texas and New Hampshire have high property taxes, Tennessee and Nevada lean on high sales taxes, and Washington uses sales plus a capital-gains tax. The income-tax savings can be offset by these other taxes and by cost of living.

How much do you save with no state income tax on $75,000?

On a $75,000 salary, a single filer in a no-income-tax state keeps about $61,593 after federal tax and FICA. Compared with Maryland, the highest-tax state in this study, that's roughly $4,630 more per year kept — purely from state income tax.

Does Washington really have no income tax?

Washington has no tax on wages, salaries or retirement income — but since 2022 it levies a 7% tax on long-term capital gains above roughly $278,000, and a 2025 law added a 2.9% surcharge on gains over $1 million. For ordinary earners, Washington functions as a no-income-tax state.

Will more states eliminate income tax?

Several are cutting toward zero — North Carolina's flat rate is on a path from 4.25% (2025) to 2.99% by 2028 if revenue targets hold, and other states have trimmed rates. Outright elimination is rare because it requires replacing the revenue, but the trend among flat-tax states is downward.
